LANDO // friday, Brazilian GP 2023

As someone who actually worked in casualty recording, what irks me about the posts like this is not just the "genocide competition" angle but where do they even take this data from (well, I know where's the numbers on the left came from - google front page).

As of September 2023, UN reports 21k civilian losses in Ukraine. The number does NOT account for the Russian-occupied territories like, for example, Mariupol, pre-war population 300k, which was raised to the ground and so the losses in the city alone just logically would be tens of thousands (if not over 100k) but the UN cannot add a hypothetical figure to their official stats.

Where does the 9k number come from? One of the previous reports that Google still displays on the front page of the search and people who made this picture are too lazy to scroll down to the second or third link.

In conclusion, you can, in fact, support Palestine without invalidating Ukrainian losses and manipulating numbers to serve your own agenda. This is not a fucking competition. These numbers are not just numbers. These are people. People who had names, families, dreams, they had pets, favorite movies, and favorite toys. And you, guys, are being at the very least insensitive cunts for throwing that "9k" around like it's not a town-full of real actual human beings that lived through the horror most of you, fortunately, would never have to experience, and had their lives cut short by the war.

    Palestine will be free.

    Ukraine will be free.

    And may the evil slumber.

  • And just to clarify, I don't think that the person who made this particular image manipulated the figures with some malicious intent to do so. They just went with what they googled first without thinking about the sources or limitations.

The number of civilian losses in Gaza has been provided by the local Ministry of Health. They can probably access the numbers on the ground very quickly and pretty accurately.

The number of civilian losses in Ukraine comes from a UN report, and a redundant one at that. I guarantee you that if the UN were to do a casualty report on Gaza right now it would have featured a much smaller number - not because someone is trying to cover up something but because they have a very precise pedantic approach to casualty verification. This is not a video game where numbers automatically pop-up on the screen. Casualty recording and verification is a lengthy difficult process and whenever you see a number on the internet you should always think where did it come from.
